Biscuit

I've just come across this sweet poem by Jane Kenyon. Superficially, but just superficially, a poem about the relationship between a pet and its owner. On another level, I find this is an in-depth analysis of the nature of trust. What do you think?

Biscuit

The dog has cleaned his bowl
and his reward is a biscuit,
which I put in his mouth
like a priest offering the host.

I can't bear that trusting face!
He asks for bread, expects
bread, and I in my power
might have given him a stone.

This poem gives us a lot of food for thought. And, it reminded me something:" a dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself". Unhappily, it goes through life trusting his owner without making sure he (the owner) is worthy of trust...poor dog...what a fool!

Yes, but, come to think of it,trust pervades every single aspect of our daily lives. It is trust that allows for the simplest activities, such as crossing the street or buying bread! At the end of the day, everything presupposes reliance on someone else's competence and benevolence.
